Press Release: Patients Urged to Take Action in Response to New CDC Data

Washington, DC, August 8, 2008 — The Epilepsy Foundation urges people who have experienced seizures to take advantage of a new resource, NoMoreSeizures.org, to become active partners in managing their treatment for the condition. This announcement comes as a new multi-state study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reveals that about 1% of adults have active epilepsy, and many may not be receiving the best medical treatment. More...

Study Examines Driving Habits of People with Epilepsy 07/08/2008
Research shows that people with epilepsy continue to drive despite medical restrictions. In a study from the Ohio State University Medical Center, 26 percent of patients with epilepsy reported having an accident due to a seizure and 19 percent said they were dishonest about seizures in order to drive.

Senator Edward M. Kennedy, 76, the second-longest-serving member of the Senate, had a seizure on May 17 at his Hyannis Port home and was flown to a Boston hospital to be evaluated. Doctors originally thought he had suffered a stroke, then reported it was a seizure. A biopsy of part of his brain revealed a cancerous tumor as the cause of the seizure.
